Subacute bacterial endocarditis

Definition: Subacute inflammation of the endocardium. Streptococcus viridans is the usual etiologic agent of SBE. The distinction between "acute" and "subacute" endocarditis has traditionally been made based on the pathogenic organism and clinical presentation.
